Iowa LB Jacody Coleman plans to transfer

Junior LB Jacody Coleman plans to transfer from the Iowa football program. Coleman has asked for and been given his release. Jacody played in all 13 games for the Hawkeyes last season and was the starting MIKE Linebacker in Iowa's first two games against Maine and FIU. He recorded 28 tackles last year, 7 solo and 21 assists. Coleman, a Beaumont, TX native, was one of 11 true freshman that saw action during the 2007 season.

Where are they now? Tim Dodge

Tim Dodge played football for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 1997 to 2001. Dodge played both wide receiver and defensive back for the football team, as well as contributing on special teams. He was moved from wide receiver to cornerback between his sophomore and junior years. In 2000, Dodge started 9 games at cornerback for Iowa and intercepted 2 passes that season. He switched back to the offensive side of the ball and played receiver again as a senior in 2001. Dodge played in all 12 games as a senior catching 13 passes for 138 yards. “Viper” had 4 receptions for 26 yards in Iowa’s 19-16 win over Texas Tech in the 2001 Alamo Bowl. A two-sport athlete in college, the Britt, Iowa native also ran track for the Hawkeyes. As a sophomore in 1999, Dodge earned All-American track honors as a member of the Hawkeyes’ 4 x 400 meter relay team. In 2001, he finished 2nd in the 100 meter dash at the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Dodge has played in the af2 (Arena Football League 2) since 2003 and has five years experience in the af2. In 2004, while a member of the Quad City Steamwheelers, Dodge caught 108 passes for 1596 yards and 24 TDs and was named the 2004 af2 Ironman of the Year. He was invited to tryout with the NFL’s Carolina Panthers in 2005 but eventually returned to Quad City and Arena football.

Dodge played last year with the Iowa Barnstormers and had 87 receptions for 947 yards and 16 TDs. This year he is again playing Wide Receiver and Defensive Back for the Barnstormers. In four games this season, Dodge has caught 28 passes for 276 yards and 6 TDs. He has also returned 2 kick-offs for touchdowns. The Barnstormers are currently 3-2 on the season. Their next home game is May 23rd against the Amarillo Dusters. For tickets to any home Barnstormer game, visit www.theiowabarnstormers.com or call the ticket office at 515.633.2255.

Former Hawkeyes picked in NFL Draft

    Round 3 - 1st Pick (65th Overall)

New York Jets - RB - Shonn Greene

NFL.com Analysis: With Thomas Jones unhappy with his contract situation, the Jets add a potential replacement with the selection of Greene. As a downhill power runner with exceptional vision, Greene will serve as a banger between the tackles in the Jets' power-running offense.

    Round 3 - 2nd Pick (66th Overall)
St Louis Rams - CB - Bradley Fletcher

NFL.com Analysis: The Rams add an athletic cornerback with their pick of Fletcher. The former Hawkeye has the size to slide inside to safety, but he should make his initial contribution as a nickel or dime defender in the Rams' sub-package.

    Round 4 - 32nd Pick (132nd Overall)
Denver Broncos - OG - Seth Olsen
NFL.com Analysis: When you draft an Iowa lineman, you know he's technically sound and has been well-coached. Olsen has great strength and can step in and play guard right away. He's similar to Marshal Yanda, who was drafted by Baltimore a couple years ago. He's got strong hands.

    Round 6 - 29th Pick (202nd Overall)
Oakland Raiders - TE - Brandon Myers
NFL.com Analysis: Myers is more of a blocking tight end. He serves as an extra lineman more than as a pass catcher. Iowa does a great job of developing run-blocking tight ends. Myers should help the Raiders' running game.

    Undrafted Free Agents:
Mitch King - DT - The 2009 Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year was projected to be drafted by some as high as the 3rd round. He was not drafted but agreed to terms with the Tennessee Titans.

Matt Kroul - DT - Kroul has agreed to a Free Agent contract with the New York Jets.

Andy Brodell - WR - Brodell agreed to a Free Agent deal with the Green Bay Packers Sunday night.

Rob Bruggeman - C - Bruggeman was not selected in this year's Draft but signed with the Tampa Bay Bucaneers Sunday night.

    Cully Payne signs with Iowa

Payne officially signed with the Hawkeyes today, the first day of the spring signing period. Payne joins Iowa natives Eric May and Brennan Cougill in this year's class. The Hawkeyes are hoping to also sign JuCo Forward Devan Archie who has verbally committed to the Iowa basketball program. An Archie signing would still leave Iowa with 2 open scholarships, and Coach Lickliter anticipates filling at least one of those.

Here is the U of I Press Release on Cully Payne's signing and the current class:

IOWA CITY, IA - - Cully Payne, a senior point guard at Schaumberg, IL HS, has signed a national letter of intent to join the University of Iowa basketball program. Iowa men’s Basketball Coach Todd Lickliter made the announcement Wednesday.

“Cully is a true point guard, although he can play the two position as well,” said Lickliter. “He is a very effective point guard and shoots the ball well. He’s a very competitive player who plays the game at a great pace. He’s an excellent addition to our program.”

Payne (6-1, 180) played in just 16 games as a senior due to injury. Despite missing the final 13 games of his senior season, Payne was a unanimous selection to the Mid-Suburban all-Conference team and was named West Division Player of the Year for the second straight year. The Daily Herald and Pioneer Press newspapers named Payne to their all-Area teams in each of the past two seasons. He was named first team all-state by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association as a senior after earning second team honors as a junior.

He averaged 21.6 points, 5.4 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 steals per contest as a senior, leading his team to 14 straight wins to begin the season before being injured. Payne shot 49% from the field, 38% from three-point range and 82% from the free throw line. He averaged 20.5 points and six assists in four conference games. His career-high is 39 points and he scored in double figures in 15 of 16 games.

As a junior Payne scored 16.8 points per outing while averaging 4.9 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.7 steals. He shot 46% from the field, 30% from three-point range and 81% from the free throw line. Payne had a career-best 10 assists in two games while leading Schaumberg to a 19-10 overall record.

Lickliter and the Iowa staff signed two prep players during the early signing period in November, guard Eric May (6-5, 220) of Dubuque, IA and forward/center Brennan Cougill (6-9, 260) of Sioux City, IA.

May earned first team all-state honors as a junior and senior. He led Wahlert HS to the Class 3-A state title as a junior, averaging 18.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. This past season he averaged 24.3 points and 9.1 rebounds as Wahlert (18-7) earned a return trip to the state tournament before a loss in the quarter-finals.

Cougill led Bishop Heelan HS to the Class 3-A state title this past season while earning “Mr. Basketball” honors in the state. Cougill also earned first team all-state honors as a junior and senior, and, like May, was named captain of the state all-tournament team after leading his team to the title. Cougill averaged 17.8 points.
